The Big Lunch - Theale's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Theale will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a community picnic event on Sunday 3rd June 2012 at the Theale Recreation Ground on Englefield Road.
The Jubilee celebrations aim to bring the people of the community together. They will begin with a special Jubilee Service at Holy Trinity Church at 11am for the whole community and will include contributions from different groups especially the schools and youth organisations of the village.
The “Big Lunch and Jubilee Garden Party” follows at 12.30, and will continue throughout the afternoon until 4pm with a number of main events including a Fancy Dress Competition (to be judged by Lady Benyon and local MP Alok Sharma); Children’s Country Games and a pub Tug-of-War contest.
In addition to the main events, families are encouraged to come along and join in the fun by bringing their own picnic, and enjoy the other attractions such as a Barbeque, Bouncy Castle, Bookstalls, Face Painting, Strawberry Cream Teas, and even a Rifle Range!
The Big Lunch and Jubilee Garden Party has been the idea of Holy Trinity’s Priest in Charge Reverend Ann Templeman, along with her husband and Associate Priest Reverend Peter Templeman. Being new to the village, Ann & Peter wanted to mark the 60 years of The Queen’s reign with something that would engage the whole community and bring everyone together. Ann said “to have a monarch that has reigned for such long time is a remarkable achievement and something that many of us will never experience again, and it’s only fitting that we should celebrate in a way that involves the whole community.”
Following the community picnic, Theale will be lighting its own beacon on top of Holy Trinity Church at 10.20pm on Monday 4th June. This will form part of a network of over 4000 beacons being lit by communities throughout the UK, Commonwealth, and overseas territories.
